There's lots of opportunities to move laterally, many secondment opportunities which is great for building a wide skillset early in your career. However, there are little opportunities to move up passed a certain point, and this is only getting worse due to redundancies reducing the workforce that happen every 6 months. This is a great place to start your career, but I wouldn't stay long term due to job instability and limited management roles, if that's where you want to be.
This does not apply to the graduate roles as graduates will roll off the program and receive an increase in fixed rem, essentially a "promotion." For all other roles, promotions and career progressions are not clear and difficult. The annual performance review system is pointless because exceptional employees in their role are nominated for a rating 4 and eventually just get given a rating 3 for a merely 3% raise per year. Cost of living increases more than that. The only obvious promotion or career progression is to take on leadership, which is a zero-sum game. The opportunity to take on a leadership role within the area only becomes available when another leader leaves.
Yes, my employer provide opportunities to fulfill your career aspirations. I really like how there is every type of job under one umbrella in Telstra. Telstra provides a lot of freedom to move sideways or upwards. There are always opportunities and ongoing training. I am a graduate and I am able to explore 3 or 4 different areas in my first year. People are sociable, kind and helpful and often give advice to each other about the newest developments.
Yes, regular trainings are provided and continuous learning is encouraged which I find really interesting about the company. The learnings and certification exams done help for the career development and the promotion facilities are announced by the leaders and encouraged to try. Leaders also provide good advice to the grads and other team members to advance their paths.
I feel they are a lot of opportunities outside of your team at Telstra to do different things and showcase your skills but sadly I do think it is difficult for career progression and moving up the ranks.
